Adobe Takes a Fresh Step into ECM: Integrates Alfresco
Adobe Systems Incorporated (NASDAQ:ADBE) announced the addition of enterprise
content management (ECM) capabilities to Adobe LifeCycleTM Enterprise Suite (ES)
through a technology partnership with privately held Alfresco. This announcement
is in-synch with Nemertes' findings that enterprise interest in ECM is growing
based on Nemertes' upcoming Unified Communications and Collaboration
benchmark with more than 50% of participants using, evaluating or planning to
use ECM in the next 18 months.
Impacts:
Enterprises: ECM requires tight integration of content development and
content lifecycle management. Given Adobe's presence in the content development
space and Alfresco's position in the open source ECM space, this is a match that
should be evaluated closely.
Vendors: Alfresco has a large following and dedicated developer base. Adobe's
partnership should raise the tide for Alfresco and the entire Alfresco
ecosystem.
Investors: Adobe pushing the open source ECM bandwagon will cause
consternation among proprietary ECM providers, including Open Text (NASDAQ:OTEX)
and Vignette (NASDAQ:VIGN).
