Red Canary Funding Highlights Role of Managed and Professional Cybersecurity Services

In our 2016/2017 Security and Risk Management Benchmark and Maturity Model, we highlighted a set of “bellwether technologies”: Technologies that, we believed, would characterize the most sophisticated security organiztions. By and large, the technologies we selected were, in fact, considerably more likely to be deployed by more mature organizations (in some cases three or four times more likely).

But that wasn’t true when it came to managed and professional cybersecurity services, which were deployed at almost identical rates (66%) by the most mature organizations and organizations overall. Why? One big reason is that the category was too broad: it encomasses everything from penetration testing (conducted by almost every organization) to firewall management.

That said, our conviction continues that strategic use of the right managed and professional services is a hallmark of more mature security organizations. Access Venture Partners and Noro- Mosely Partners would seem to agree, given their recent $6.1 million Series A investment in Red Canary.

Red Canary describes its market space as “managed detection and response”–esentially, the semi-automated, human-curated management and monitoring of an enterprise organization. The goal is to provide the best of both worlds: Quick detection of a breach, delivered by the automation; and human-empowered assist in providing context and remediation.

It’s early days, but this is definitely a space to watch. And for infosec professionals: consider investing in these, or similar managed and professional services.
