Desktops are so Twentieth Century. From virtualized desktops to personal intelligent devices, the definition of “endpoint” is undergoing a radical shift. We provide a forward-looking view of conventional enterprise endpoints—laptops and desktops, tablets and phones—as well as the reinvigoration of virtual desktops and VDI, and the concept of Desktops as a Service. We cover the emergence of new interfaces for end users, and virtual and augmented realities in the workplace. For all these, we explore security concerns and the techniques and technologies that allow deployment and use with a minimum of risk. Overall, we look at practices for deploying, managing, and benefiting from the next phase of endpoint computing.
